At Top Mobile Vision we would like to inform you on the IP rating numbers and why they are important.

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are used as a reference to provide information on the level of protection for electrical enclosures and its contents against environmental conditions.

An IP rating normally contains two numbers (but sometimes may contain three)

First is the resistance from solid objects or materials
Second is the resistance from liquids (water)
Third is the resistance against mechanical impacts (not typically used)

Resistance from solid objects or materials

0= No particular resistance
1= Safeguarded for solid objects over 50 mm, for example a unintentional touch by a human hand
2= Safeguarded for solid objects over 12 mm, for example a unintentional touch by a human finger
3= Safeguarded for solid objects over 2.5 mm for example tools and wires)
4= Safeguarded for solid objects over 1 mm (tools, wires, and small wires)
5= Safeguarded for dust (allows some dust)
6= Safeguarded for against dust completely (dust tight)

Resistance from water

0= No protection
1= Safeguarded for falling drops of condensation
2= Safeguarded for direct sprays of water up to 15o from the vertical
3= Safeguarded for direct sprays of water up to 60o from the vertical
4= Safeguarded for water sprayed from all directions
5= Safeguarded for low pressure jets of water from all directions
6= Safeguarded for temporary flooding of water. Mainly for use on ship decks
7= Safeguarded for the effect of immersion between 15 cm and 1 m of water
8= Safeguarded for long periods of immersion under pressure water
9= Safeguarded for long periods of immersion under high pressure water
